What Is NTEP Certification?
NTEP, or the National Type Evaluation Program, is administered by the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM). Through NTEP, commercial weighing and measuring devices are evaluated to determine whether they are capable of meeting applicable requirements established in NIST Handbook 44.
An NTEP Certificate of Conformance provides assurance that the evaluated device or component has successfully completed the applicable type-evaluation process. This is an important consideration when selecting equipment intended for commercial weighing applications.
What Does Legal for Trade Mean?
A Legal for Trade scale is used in commercial transactions where the weight displayed by the scale affects the price charged to a customer. NTEP certification is an important part of selecting equipment for these applications, but NTEP certification alone does not automatically make an installed scale Legal for Trade. Final approval for commercial use is determined by the applicable state or local weights-and-measures authority and may require inspection, registration, sealing, or other requirements depending on the jurisdiction.
